Background
Becoming energy independent was not my original intention or motivation.
I simply did not want to be dependent upon people who hated us for
the fuel that heated my home during our cold New England winters.
But one thing led to another and two years after taking the first
step to becoming free from oil I find myself living in a Zero
Net Energy Home - I had never heard the term “zero net energy”
before the unintended journey began.
Natural
gas is not available on our street and our previous experience with
propane as a heat source for our cabin in western Maine left us with the
impression, rightly or wrongly, that propane would be an expensive choice.
It
appeared that cutting and splitting wood to reduce our dependency upon oil
would continue to be our best option.
We burn between five and six cord of wood each heating season.
The exercise is good however; my wife of fifty years was beginning
to complain a tiny bit about splitting, stacking and carrying all that
wood into the house, never mind the mess it made for her to clean up.
:-)
My
brother Bob owns an HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning)
business near Bangor, Maine. He
told me of a local company that had developed a revolutionary heating and
cooling device that was very economical to operate.
Perhaps I would be interested in learning more about it.
And
that’s how the transformation of our 1970’s two story colonial house
into a Zero Net Energy Home
began.
This is a our 1970's house with the solar panels installed. The
light colored box just beneath the chimney is the cold climate heat pump
that both heats the house in the winter and cools then cools it in the
summer. The central air-conditioning that came with the heat pump system
was an added bonus as we didn't have central air conditioning
before.
The
heat pump and solar panels are two of three important components
the book covers that, when combined, lead to ENERGY INDEPENDENCE and
freedom from utility and fuel bills. Reaching NET ZERO ENERGY
status without applying the third component is very unlikely. But
not to worry, all the information and data you need to complete the
process is in the book.
ADDED
BONUS
The second half of the book is a comprehensive listing of State, Local and
Federal Grants, Credits, Rebates and Free Stuff and includes websites
where the latest and up to date data con be found.
