The word pirate conjures up many images; to some, a swarthy somewhat heroic figure, others bloodthirsty rogues armed to the teeth.  In any event, the pirate’s habitat one typically envisions is the warm waters of the Caribbean and not the icy grey waters of New England .  New England waters are perhaps the last place you would expect to find pirate adventures and treasure but find them here you will indeed.

In fact, the only pirate treasure ship ever to be discovered with its treasure still aboard is located close to shore off Cape Cod , Massachusetts .  The slave ship “Whydah” sank in a storm in April of 1717.  Almost three hundred years later, in 1984, Cape Cod native Barry Clifford found it buried in the sand off Marconi Beach in Wellfleet.  The latest estimate of the value of this treasure is four hundred million dollars!  There are stories of Pirate treasure buried and evidence uncovered supporting the tales in every New England state.  How much more is still out there waiting to be uncovered?

Piracy lured men from every strata of society.  We found a doctor, several successful businessmen, fishermen, carpenters, politicians, native Americans and, of course, seafarers who gave it all up for life as a pirate.
